Background transparency problem in NextGen Gallery thumbnails

Featured Image

For some time I didn't keep my post thumbnails in NextGen Gallery. On this website they are all PNG images with a transparent background. The thumbnails created by NextGen were losing background transparency and their background was black. It was unacceptable because of theme switching. My themes use different backgrounds and thumbnails looked rather ugly. Finally I found this post: ...plugin-nextgen-gallery-problems-with-png-transparency-thumbnails which offered a solution. It requires a modification of NextGen plugin code and after every upgrade of NextGen you'll have to remember to re-apply this patch.

I've added three more nodes to website's VPS. That gave me 40GB of disk space, 1504MB of RAM, and 1TB of monthly bandwidth. The system is running without any downtime since the middle of March. It is six months now from moving into cloud VPS and one thing I'm sure about is that going back to shared hosting environment is not an option anymore.

FPW Post Instructions 1.2.1 released

Featured Image

This is a maintenance release of the plugin which fixes problems with quotes being escaped ( eg. 'text' becomes 'text' ) when read from database. This problem was related to post types of  'page', 'link', and custom post types.

The plan for version 1.2.2 is to add contextual help which is missing since initial release.

FPW Post Instructions plugin

This plugin is not available anymore!

New features in WordPress 3.0+ as custom post types and post formats introduced some challenges to webmasters of corporate websites with many users holding post publishing / editing privileges. Especially post formats which use the standard post editing screens but may have certain rules imposed by the implementation. Click on a link above this post to see the plugin in WordPress repository.

Webmasters could try the following options: make a course / training for editors, distribute instructions for editors in a form of printed material, or give editors a link to the documentation. All these methods are good based on one assumption that editors will remember where to find this information. Unfortunately information obtained during the course can be forgotten, printed materials lost or misplaced, and, as everybody knows, people tend to avoid reading documentation.

In attempt to solve this set of problems I have developed FPW Post Instructions plugin. The plugin adds a metabox to post editing screens with special instructions for editors. You can make it as eye-catching as you want ( html in the content is allowed ). It will show on every post editing screen so it cannot be forgotten or misplaced.
